Heating Your Patio – Propane Heaters to enhance your Party!

Will Propane heaters heat a patio?

The simple answer is YES!  Gas Patio heaters are one of the best ways to heat any space outdoors!  They are versatile and easy to hook up, unlike electric heaters that take some electrical know-how to run wires and install outlets (unless you already have an outside outlet).  Also,  with a typical 120-volt outlet you are limited to a 1500 watt heater!

However, The pros of an electric heater are that you can use them in an enclosed area or room.  See our post: Electric patio heaters-Which patio heaters are the best?

On the other hand,  this post is about Propane (Gas) patio heaters!

“Let comfort be your guide!”  These words are what came to my mind when wanting to show you how “Heating a Patio” can bring you, and your guests, comfort outside your home!

Are propane patio heaters safe?

The safest way to use any patio heater is to follow the manufacturers operating instructions.  The patio heater that you chose should depend on where the heater will be used.

  • Electric patio heaters can be used anywhere as long as the elements are at a safe distance from flammable materials. They can be ceiling mounted or even used indoors!
  • Propane or Natural Gas gas heaters need to be used in a well-ventilated area, with stand-up types having an auto shut-off switch in case of tipping over.  I am posting about Propane heaters only.  Not natural gas!   (Nature Gas Heaters should be professionally installed)
  • Wood Patio Heaters are more commonly called Firepits of just wood stoves.  Firepits need to be set in an open area free of any overhanging flammable materials.  Wood stoves are always set up professionally with the correct length of Chimney installed!

Propane patio heaters for outdoor use

Any heater that is to be used outdoors is subject to the extremes of the weather.  Also… Propane or (LPG) gas gives off moisture while running.  Here are some tips that you should consider…

  1. Purchase a good quality heater!  Cheaper models can have inferior parts that corrode over time.
  2. By a cover for your patio heater!  this will lengthen the life of your heater.
  3. Make sure you get a heater with wheels for any stand-up patio heater.   You will want to move it under cover when not in use!
  4. Clearance around your heater.  (Stand-up models) It is recommended to have three feet above the unit and two feet to the sides.
  5.  Never shorten or modify the heaters post!  Instead… purchase a tabletop model!
